Why Post-Storm Inspection Matters
New Jersey averages 30+ thunderstorms per year. After any major weather event, catching damage early prevents small issues from becoming costly problems.
Step 1: Start From the Ground
Never climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Use binoculars and walk the perimeter looking for:
- Missing or displaced shingles — bare patches or shingles hanging off the edge
- Debris on the roof — branches can puncture underlayment without visible exterior damage
- Damaged flashing — bent or lifted metal around chimneys, vents, skylights
- Granule accumulation — check downspout exits for sand-like granules (shingle erosion)
Step 2: Check Your Attic
Use a flashlight and look for wet spots, daylight through the deck, musty smells, and stained wood. If you see active water intrusion, place a bucket and call a roofer immediately — mold can grow within 24-48 hours.
Step 3: Document Everything
Take photos from multiple angles. Note dates and locations. Screenshot the weather report. This documentation is critical for insurance claims.
Step 4: Know When to Call a Pro
Call a licensed roofer for: 3+ missing shingles, any interior water signs, structural damage (sagging ridge), displaced flashing, or hail dents on metal components.
