The Fall Roof Prep Checklist
1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Task #1. Clogged gutters = ice dams = interior water damage. Wait until late November when most leaves have fallen. Direct downspouts 4+ feet from foundation.
2. Inspect Flashing and Sealant
Check around chimneys, skylights, vent pipes. Cracked caulking or lifted flashing costs $100-$300 to fix now vs thousands later.
3. Look for Missing Shingles
Use binoculars from the ground. Any gaps should be repaired before winter — an open invitation for ice and water.
4. Trim Overhanging Branches
Heavy snow causes breakage. Trim back at least 6 feet. Hire an arborist for tall trees.
5. Check Attic Insulation and Ventilation
Your primary ice dam defense. Check insulation depth (should be 12-16 inches), ensure soffit vents aren't blocked, verify ridge vents are clear.
6. Fix Existing Leaks
Water that freezes expands 9%, widening every gap. A small October leak becomes a much larger January leak.
What to Have on Hand
- Roof rake (telescoping, from the ground — never climb a snowy roof)
- Calcium chloride ice melt (NOT rock salt — damages shingles)
- Your roofer's emergency number
